Winning at Roulette: How to get an Edge on the House

Why is roulette so tough to beat? It's due to the house advantage or "edge". On a European wheel (one zero) there are 37 numbers. If you play one number then on average you will hit once every 37 spins. You would have bet a total of 37 units. If you win the house pays you 36 units (35 units plus your original bet is returned to you). You win 36 but you have bet 37 so this is not considered a "fair game" in economics. Your return is 36/37- 1= -2.7%. So you will lose on average 2.7% of all the money that you have wagered. This is why roulette is difficult to beat. Forget about the American (double zero) wheel with its 5.4 % disadvantage for the player. PLAY ONLY EUROPEAN WHEELS.

PROGRESSION BETTING: If the house has an edge there is no way of changing your bet size that will turn a losing game for you into a winning game. On the other hand, if you were able to get a positive edge on the casino then a progressive betting system can be quite effective and really maximize your profits. The better systems on the market have flat betting or a slight progression. Stay away from systems that claim to beat the house "mathematically", i.e. purely by changing the bet size. As an example, here are some mathematical systems applied to even money bets (red/black, hi/lo, even/odd). The advantage of these even money bets is that when the zero comes up you lose only half your bet. Effectively, the house edge is only 1.35 %. The bad news is that most of these systems are negative progression systems, you bet bigger as you are losing. These are well known systems and their details can be found many places including www.ez-roulette.com. Martingale System (Negative Progression) The D'Alembert Betting System (Negative Progression) Labouchere (Negative Progression) Fibonacci (Negative Progression)

Oscar's Grind (mixed progression) The Labouchere System in Reverse: (Positive Progression) Negative betting systems allow you to win a little very frequently but one day you "implode" and give it all back and then some. Positive betting systems will "bleed" you most of the time and occasionally you have a huge score. Considering the realities of roulette, if we had to play one of these systems it would be Oscar's grind. Winning Systems: More advanced systems attempt to use more than mathematics to beat the wheel. They use physics. They look for non randomness in the outcome of the roulette wheel. Non random means somewhat predictable. We mean predictable in a statistical sense. For example, the ball has 60% chance to fall into a certain half of the wheel. If the wheel was totally random the probability would be 50%. One commercially available system is EZ System. It covers one third of the wheel but hits more often than 33% of the time. This is called a statistical advantage or "edge". EZ System has a 6.7% edge over the casino. If you play often enough you will win. To get an edge typically one or more of the following are exploited: * Wheel bias: Most wheels are not new and therefore imperfect. Normal wear and tear will create unevenness in wheel and the ball will tend to fall in some parts of the wheel more than others. * Dealer Signature: Most seasoned dealers will spin the wheel and throw the ball methodically and evenly. What happens then is that the ball will tend to develop a pattern relative to its last placement, say ¼ turn when the ball is thrown clockwise and ½ turn when the ball is thrown counter-clockwise. * Ball trajectory Patterns: This is similar to dealer signatures except that it is an irregular wheel that causes the ball trajectory patterns. Our advice is to stick to a European wheel with one zero because the house edge is only 2.7 %. Then find a system that exploits one or more of the above.
